I recieved late last night a very interesting email from a member here who prefers to remain nameless. the basis of his reply to me is that instead of "proving" that im a losing player i have actually "proven" that im in the upper class of MTT players...im still going over all the info he sent me and debating the facts contained in my own mind...i do feel the arguments have some merit but whether they apply to me personally i'm yet to decide....
simply put the argument he presented is such. if you play the lottery 1,000,740 times and win nothing are you a good or a bad lottery player??
If you then play the lottery for the 1,000,741st time and win 5,000,000 you have only played 1 more time but yet you are clearly now a "great" lottery player.
that is breaking it down to its simplist degree but thats the main point i think..im going to continue to investigate this topic today and hopefully update tonight on what conclusions i have reached....in the mean time i thought id share this photo i found last night while researching this topic....pretty much describes the way ive felt lately...lol

Well it looks like i'm going to turn my game over to a mentor. This is a well known poker mind who backs many bigtime players but none as old as myself. he mostly deals with these young internet wizards. he'll be sending several to tunica next month. im a long way from being part of his "team" but the fact that he is interested in helping me is very encouraging...i'd go so far as to say im honored actually. ill probably save the details of my work with him from here on out for my poker blog and thats if he wants me sharing it at all. but here is the main part of the email i got this morning. i have deleted parts of it ..but im excited about this guys interest in my game and wanted to share what i can with you all. ....

Apparently you have had many losses in your life. you equate those losses with shame
you then in your mind prefer quitting to shame. therefore you must stop seeing not winning as losing.
when you make the correct decision you cannot lose therefore there is no shame.
In the hands that you have posted, in the ones that you have sent me and in the tournys i have
observed you in i see the same theme throughout. You fear losing any hand. losing a hand causes
you to play even tighter than you already do as so to not lose another hand. its almost like you start
out as a champion player and gradually as the tourny progresses become a very poor player. you are
allowing your fear of losing to cause you to admit defeat when it doesnt even exsist. i want to get
deeper into the emotional side of your game in coming days. read the articles i have sent you and
hopefully it will save me some typing.
On your game itself, the mechanics so to speak. How can you not realize that your losing as a big
favorite is due entirely to the fear we just discussed. You never play a hand as a dog, you are without
a doubt the tightest player i have ever run across. since it is a given you cannot win every hand and
you NEVER play a hand as a dog what else can happen but you lose as a favorite? you play so few hands
then compound it by playing them for most or all of your chips that anytime the cards dont fall your
way you are going to be in a hole. in one series you sent me you played 4 hands in an hour, in each of those
hands you commited 75% or more of your chips . true you almost doubled your stack the 1st 3 times but on
the 4th hand your opponent got lucky and all the gains you had made were wiped out in the 1 hand.
True the poker books say that a tight /aggressive style is the best style. but you are an extremist like no other
ive ever seen . you play very few hands yet play them all for all your chips. This is so simple i cannot
fathom how you have become this type of player and not see that it cannot win on a consistent basis.
You have to loosen up your game and you have to become less aggressive. not more!!
Being aggressive does not mean playing for all your chips everytime you have the lead in a hand.
One change i would like to see you make is to get out of the Party 40K everynight. this has to be the highest
variance tourny on the net with over 2200 most nights. instead concentrate on some lower buy-in re-buy
tournys, these should work to loosen your starting hand requirements.
Again i believe that the underlying problem here is your fear of losing. you say you hate to lose, that is incorrect
in my view. you are scared of losing, scared to the point of not taking risks that are +ev in the long run.
Lets look at AQ for example, why are you not raising everytime with AQ? are you aware that in a 9 player game
AQ is the best hand 85% of the time? several times i see where you fold to a minimal raise..this is wrong! this is scared
poker. and when you flop either the A or the Q you are ready to shove your chips in the middle to quickly. if there
are no scare cards on the board why try to drive your opponent off the hand? let the hand play out, build a pot .
ive also noticed that when your cards are suited you always limp. i assume you are doing this to keep players in the
hand for the value it will bring if you make a nut flush. WRONG WRONG WRONG!! huge leak alert! you have to know
that the odds of you hitting that flush can never be high enough to make wasting that premium hand +ev. you should never be
playing that hand for its flush value until you have at least 3 and maybe even 4 to the flush.. play the hand exactly as you
would if it were unsuited ( as described above) then if it turns into a flush draw play its value at that point. until then its
simply AQ. raise and play it accordingly.
I'M running out of time here, i hope we can talk soon i have so much more to run by you. but for now let me leave you with this.
you have great potential in this game. the keys to unlocking it are mostly in your mind and they way you relate your game to
your present mental state. The player i watched in the Gift Tree tourny last week can play with anybody. whatever your mindset was that day is
the mindset we want you to have every time you sit down. honestly most players cannot overcome the obstacles you have in front of you.
younger players do not have these thought processes as deeply imbedded in their subconscious as you seem to have. i would consider it a great feat to help
you overcome these obstacles. but i will not invest the time required in someone who may quit on me at any time. if you want my assistance
the word quit is no longer in your vocabulary. i have a proven record of helping players reach their potential, i see your potential..if you
want my continued assistance you will do it my way and no other. the negative thoughts may not be able to be removed from your subconcious
overnight but the outward expression of them can be. remember all thoughts are positive , its only in your mind that you allow them to be
reshaped as negative. keep your emotions under control , try to begin reshaping your game in the ways i have described. your game can be fixed easily
a little at a time. lets get the mind work done 1st... ill be talking with you again soon.

Not sure what to make of it.

agreed. I have to say that i am a member of a few poker boards and propoker's posts can be the most baffling of them all. it seems like he does pretty well but when he loses he acts as if he is the only person in the tournament to get knocked out. And he seems to take it very personally. After a loss PPP acts like someone just shot his dog.

Whoever this mystery man is, he made a very good point regarding PPP"s game: "Again i believe that the underlying problem here is your fear of losing. you say you hate to lose, that is incorrectin my view. you are scared of losing, "

I play about 15,000 hands a month. Mostly NL 200 6max games and suffer some incredible beats on a almost nightly basis. Its part of the game. By now you should have realized that losing is part of the game.

And from your posts you seem to do pretty well in these tourneys. I play 1 or 2 big tourneys a month (as a change of pace) and have a losing record. You seem to hold your own. instead of complaining about your losses just focus on the good parts of your game.

Remember, positive attitude leads to positive play.

Finally, be careful when someone offers to back you.

Well known poker mind? Who is this mystery man? Sounds like a great deal if you are going to be backed in any events, I'd love to find someone to back me in some bigger events($5k-$10k)

What should he be careful about? This is an honest question, I've never been backed so I wouldn't know what to be careful about exactly. Thanks

Whoaaaa fellas, there is no offer to back me in anything or even any mention of ever being part of his team. he does read this forum when he passes thru here looking for sportsbetting info. his offer to help me is just because that what he does. all the players he backs are internet pros i'd say under 25.im over 40. he says it will be much harder to teach an old dog new tricks than it is his younger group. that challange is apparently his only incentive. he knows im straight , ugly and poor so i dont know what else he could want out of the deal...lol
the only reason ive promised not to openly state who he is that he would rather not have everyone knowing he is involved in sportsbetting.
I have to do something or just quit playing poker. im just about insane over the way my game has gone of late and the fact that i have yet to make a big score doing it. hundreds i can do, but i need thousands and i need it soon. another thing that most of you dont know about me is im a complete loner. i know no other person that plays poker or sportsbetting either for that matter. i had a friend years ago who i could sound off and get feedback from but he passed away very suddenly and since then these forums and the people in them are my only friends...( hard up? tell me about it! lol) so yes i know i unload here more than other posters but its the only outlet i have to do so. its either blow off steam here or learn to do my own sheetrock repairs!!!:missingte

I have never been backed, but whenever someone offers you a deal revolving poker and it is unsolicited i tend to be a little cautious. I have no real life example or anything specific to base it on, other than common sense. I do wish PPP all the luck, he seems to do pretty good on his own and some expert advice could do his a game a world of good.

i trade currencies and i am backed with cash from all over the world. personally trading my own money i can make huge returns because im not afraid to take any risk. when i deal other peoples money i become alot "tighter" always trying to sell or buy the daily high or low to keep the risk of loss low. this leads me not to be involved in many "+" expectations because its harder to enter at lower prices with more risk.

ive recently tried out this poker thing myself playing online. in poker i find it easy to make a small profit daily - however when i try to make amounts that i can make in currencies the variances go flying out the window. because theres always someone willing to risk everything on a low percentage play and they will hit it and take a percentage from you that you should not lose.

so its a dilemma to play more on high value hands but if you dont make enough by scaring people out early on the others and then losing one hand you commit alot of cash too - its clearly a losing situation

this post means alot to me in terms of longevity because thats how you make money- and i think its wise advice.

treat each hand on its merits play it out put the money in and let the pot values rise to a point where if you play enough you will finish in front. if you kill off the pot early or put too much into only one outcome its impossible to win

my 2 cents

ps i find online play very frustrating because there are so many occasions where the expected result for my opponent is so low yet they are willing to bet with only 2 cards that they can win with - and one of the 2 comes up. im really not sure that this is possible to be honest as it reminds me of playing online blackjack

matt

managing money for others or accepting money from others carries with it a whole different weight on your shoulders

i have one guy who calls me 28 times a day for example

think carefully before entering any type of this arrangement

This is sort of off topic but i am trying to get involved in futures and currency trading. Could you recomend any resources to a trader with only a few years of stock experience? Do you visit any trading forums? The only one that i have found is on the tradestation web site, it hasn't provided much help though.

Just woundering
